My ideas of certain things have been overthrown since coming to this country. In this case, a bakery. To me it has always means a small local shop that sells onsite made bread, perhaps with a little eat in area, and sometimes it makes cakes too. The City Bakery is a huge two floor cafe. You are not greeted with smell of freshly baked bread as you walk in (so I don't know if they make them there), there're some food by the counter but you wouldn't call it a bread shop (bakery in my mind)... But it's a nice space to sit and work for hours without bothering anyone.
